Travel Tips
Below are some recommendations for traveling to and from Costa Rica. Please keep these tips in mind:
- You do not need to be vaccinated to enter Costa Rica.
- Even though American dollars are accepted in Costa Rica, it is recommended that participants use colones as it is easier to find businesses and services that use local currency.
- Once you’ve landed, you can purchase a sim card at the airport for your unlocked phone. This new phone card will automatically generate a Costa Rican telephone number. Please budget $7 for this service. (If you are unsure as to whether your phone is unlocked or not, please check with your cell provider before traveling)
- We do not recommend renting a car, rental cars are not allowed within the retreat, if you purchase a rental car we will be unable to assist you with anything that has to do with the rental car.
- Most hotels have a free or inexpensive shuttle from the hotel to the airport to depart Costa Rica.
- Taxis from SJO airport to your hotel can range from $10 - $25, you can arrange your taxi with your hotel before you arrive in Costa Rica (which may be the most expensive option) or you can arrange a taxi at the airport when you land in Costa Rica, or you can take one of the red taxi's in front of the airport. Be sure to always tell the red taxi driver's to run the meter.
- Be sure to arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before the time of your flight departure, some airlines do not let you board the plane if you arrive under a certain time.
- Bring a pen on the plane so that you can fill out your forms
- Sometimes flights get delayed and transportation as well, we understand as this is normal while traveling. If you experience any delays, please let us know your new expected arrival time / date. A phone number will be provided to you the day before you arrive in Costa Rica. If you miss the shuttle bus be sure to contact the shuttle bus and us. If you miss the shuttle bus you can take a taxi to the public bus station that goes to Puerto Viejo De Talamanca. Public Bus Directions can be found above.
- DON’T FORGET: After you arrive in Costa Rica and go through customs make sure to change around $150 into Costa Rican Colones at the airport, this way you have money on you.
- The exit fee to leave Costa Rica is currently $28-30. Some airlines include the exit fee in the cost of the flight. Please confirm with your airline and plan accordingly.
We are elated to meet you!!
