ABOUT
Black Women Healing Retreats
Greetings,
My name is Satya, and in 2014, I left New York City to experience Latin America. Though I enjoyed the big Apple’s blistering pace, I was drained by racist ideology hovering over US culture, and I wanted a different experience. I had a magical experience traveling around Panama, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. While in Costa Rica, I volunteered at a majestic butterfly garden and consequently traded in my heels for sandals only to find that I was happier barefoot. I prioritized resting in my femininity over capitalism and in return I found complete bliss, optimal health, high quality of life and peace, something luxury could never buy. Real luxury comes from taking care of your emotional wellbeing, from the physical to the food that we eat and beyond. I climbed mountains and rode my bike under the stars. I meditated more than I ever had in my entire life, and it was here in Costa Rica, where my spiritual journey uncontrollably blossomed. I learned a different way of living, a more holistic and organic way of seeing the world. I learned that our lives are really our own, and we can create any beauty we want. I love the energy of Costa Rica. It has become my home. When I was in the United States, I would always say to myself, “I’m leaving the country for a while at some point.” I had not realized that those thoughts would later manifest into my future.
It was also here in Costa Rica, where I continued the understanding that Black women experience misogyny and anti-blackness within our own communities and from other races in the United States and globally. I was able to see it firsthand while living and traveling to so many different countries. I realized that there was this pattern of continually seeing black women experiencing misogyny and anti-blackness — Which led me to recognize that systemic racism was more substantial than what we knew. Although, Costa Rica does have a deep history of racism and misogyny which still happens there today, the most important part of my journey though was that I not only allowed Costa Rica to change my entire life by living in lush nature, but that it was now vital for me to share the experience of being outside of the United States, back in nature with other women, healing with the spiritual practice of yoga & meditation, eating holistically, connecting with the elements, our ancestors and each other. It was vital to create a sanctuary where Black Women could experience peace, tranquility, culture, feminine wellness, and nature.
I birthed Black Women Healing Retreats out of the desire to connect Black Women to nature and themselves. The retreat’s goal is to bring women together for healing and community building in the in the gorgeous jungles of Costa Rica. During the retreats, the women practice yoga, experience enriching and educational workshops by expert facilitators, go hiking on waterfalls, swim in the bluest oceans, meditate amongst themselves and each other. The retreat is a sacred sanctuary that allows black women to get back to nature across the beautiful jungles of Costa Rica and Jamaica. It is also a space to unwind, unlearn and disconnect from the psychological trauma of systemic racism. These retreats are custom designed for Black Women. If you are afraid of traveling alone, this is the perfect opportunity to begin your travel story because of the support you will receive from your traveling sisters and BWHR. These retreats are a sanctuary for women to understand the true essence and vitality of holistic wellness, femininity and healing, and we honor and welcome you!
Please Note: Although I will be at SOME of the retreats, I will not always be accessible during the retreat as Black Women shouldn't be expected to do everything. However, there will always be facilitators, teachers, healers, and staff during this wonderful experience. You can also follow me on instagram by clicking here.
