Black Women Self-Care Retreat
Mission Statement
Black Women Self Care Retreat is a retreat dedicated to black women. It is in an exclusive intimate setting where a group of women are hosted. Rather than a retreat center, the women stay in a big, beautiful jungle house, where they share meals at a communal table and curl up with a good book, on the sofa after a sweet day at the beach. You can expect gentle yoga practices, nourishing plant-based meals, group sharing, and self-peace on the tropical beaches in the Caribbean. You do not need any experience in yoga or meditation to attend. There will be plenty of leisure time where you can explore the beautiful Caribbean of Costa Rica or take some well-needed rest time. Most of our participants attend the retreats solo and they meet new people at the retreat, sometimes the women attend with their friends or family while also meeting new people at the retreat. This retreat is dedicated to women that want to have some well- deserved quiet time.

Activities
Yin Yoga Every morning the group will take a guided gentle and healing yin yoga class at the jungle house surrounded by the sounds of nature. Yin Yoga is a gentle, slow-paced yoga. Intended to allow the individual to tune into themselves through introspection, pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation, and gentle yet challenging poses to ease the mind, body, and spirit. Yin yoga allows us to work with our feminine energy, and it targets parts of the body that yang yoga may not. Yoga works with the nervous system, so it's not just spiritually but scientifically heals. With consistent practice, yoga has been known to cure depression, anxiety, and other chronic illness. It's an ancient practice and a form of healing. Meditation With a group of like-minded women, you will explore self-enlightenment, gratitude, and inner peace. Medicinal Plant/Chocolate Tour During this tour, you will learn about the Costa Rican traditions. Enjoy a medicinal plant tour led by a local medicine man. You will visit a local medicinal plant garden to learn about the indigenous natural treatments and healing powers of the plants, trees, roots, barks, etc. You will also engage in the ancestral organic process here in Costa Rica. You will sample up to 5 different chocolate flavors. You will attend a small lecture, led by a local indigenous family, on medicinal plants and their use. Silent Time There will also be periods of silent time during the retreat. This is a meditative retreat, so we practice calmness and allowing ourselves to tune within. Women's Circle Journey into a women's circle to share whatever you feel. Hike and Waterfall We will venture off on a beautiful hike to the beautiful waterfalls of Costa Rica. Massage Enjoy a restorative 60-minute massage at the Pure Jungle Spa Free Half Day There will be a free half-day during the retreat. During this time, participants will be able to attend any activity of their choice, whether its zip-lining, snorkeling, or surfing. Self-Care is prioritizing yourself first. It is listening to your mind, body and spirit. It’s taking care of yourself on a daily basis. Self-love is vital for black women because too often taught are black girls taught to put everyone else’s needs before their own. As women, we tend to be nurturers and supporters by nature, but this nurturing and supporting of everyone else's welfare, can leave us feeling burnt out. The retreat is a chance to unwind from the stress that you may experience from everyday life. Sometimes we just need a reset button, without distractions just to connect back with ourselves in order to restore and rejuvenate.
We create an environment of family, connection and sisterhood. This is a setting where you can truly be yourself. Our highest intention is to support one another in birthing more love into ourselves and the world.
Check out the Caribbean of Costa Rica here!
The South Caribbean is the most beautiful and magical place in Costa Rica and the world. Caribe is lush with green--plants, beautiful flowers, and trees so profound that they will leave a mark on you forever. It is surrounded and cut through water and jungle. It is where the jungle meets the sea! Costa Rica is home to about 6% of all biodiversity in the world. Every day you can see Howler Monkeys, sloths, wild horses, gorgeous tropical birds, and so many other creatures!
The air fills with the smells of delicious and flavorful Caribbean food. Coconuts fall from the trees, waiting to be devoured by you. While you are walking down the street, someone may say to you, “Pura Vida!” If something bad or good happens, someone may say “Pura Vida” to you. Pura Vida means “Pure Life” when translated directly, but it also means “Everything’s good.” Expressing that you are always exactly where you are supposed to be, and everything is good is a way of expressing gratitude and eternal optimism. This is Paradise. This is Costa Rica.

Black Women Self-Care Retreat is a vegan retreat; all meals are made with quality ingredients. Animal by-products are not allowed within the retreat space, with no exceptions. We provide delicious plant-based meals by our private vegan chef. As we abstain from animal by-products in the kitchen, we also abstain from alcohol throughout the retreat. This abstinence will be in effect whether guests are in the retreat, or are enjoying some well needed personal time. When practicing self-love and healing, the vessel should always be clean. Alcohol and wellness don't mix; in fact, it is the complete opposite of self-care. Usually, in black culture, it is traditional to involve alcohol in everything. However, we have shifted the culture for the positive by providing black women an opportunity to be free of things that do not serve them during their journey with us. Our goal for the alcohol cleanse is to keep the vibrations high; this will ensure a meditative and rejuvenating experience.
Self-Care is possessing enough self awareness to correct the behavior of over-functioning for others while under functioning for yourself.
Reviews From Past Participants
I feel great, I feel amazing, I feel I inspired to take what I’ve learned this week and implement everything in a more intentional way. I plan to keep up my yoga practice, the plant based eating, the affirmations and just to level up my self-care. I know when I take care of myself, I know everything around me is taken care of.
As preparation to coming here I started practicing plant base early but now after being at the retreat and eating all of the amazing delicious meals I am inspired to eat plant based from this moment on.
My experiences with the yoga classes were amazing, I was introduced to yin yoga. The yoga was comfortable yet you got a stretch. I am also someone who has been practicing yoga prior to coming here but this form of yoga speaks to me and my body. I mean I felt good everyday getting on and off the mat. There was no pain, and there was a level of comfort in yoga that I had not known prior to coming here. I enjoyed the group discussions on self care because we all had something to share and we all had a different perspective to the conversation and it was sharing and learning and it was very healing for me. I just felt comfortable sharing parts of myself that I may not have shared in other spaces.

I did enjoy the group discussions on self care and spirituality. I’m usually not as vulnerable to talk about things that I feel are just my business, but it allowed me to kind of take my spirituality to the next step and for me to reflect what I need to do for myself in self-care. I feel good, I feel more in touch with nature, more in touch with my spirituality. I feel excited to see how my life is going to change because of this. Thank you so much for showing us how to appropriately care about ourselves, how to appreciate the principles of yoga and the spirituality of the practice , thank you for opening us up to all these great opportunities in Costa Rica both in the jungle and other places, we really appreciated the whole thing.
- Gabrielle
This was not my first time trying plant based but this was my first time getting into it so I’m definitely inspired to continue as I go home. I really enjoyed the discussions on self-care and spirituality. I feel like I’ve been doing a lot of work with my own self-care and I felt like this is just the next step that I needed to keep moving forward.
- Amber
Thank you. This retreat has been everything, it’s been life changing for me. It has renewed my sense of self. I’ve learned to practice self care and self love. These are experiences I will never forget. You’ve created an environment and safe place for women to share their experiences, you’ve created an environment of trust. You’ve allowed us to connect with nature and our own spirituality. From the ocean experiences to our conversations. This is something I believe every woman should experience in their life time.
- Tonya
The yoga classes were challenging , rewarding and helpful. They were challenging because I was moving my body into poses I had never done before. The yin yoga was slower, we spent more time in the poses and really focused on my breathing. I also learned that yoga has a spiritual practice that can be taken off the mat as well. I’m very grateful for the retreat and I feel motivated.
- Monique
I thought the retreat was fabulous , my expectations were at a certain level and they were exceeded. I appreciated that it felt with our mind, our body and our spirituality and immersed us in a culture of Costa Rica only in a way that someone that knows this area could. I definitely will return. I thoroughly enjoyed the group discussions on self care and spirituality because we got to explore the internal aspects of what we do, not just with people but also the earth. All those things I thought were fabulous.
